Biography / Bibliography
Italian sculptor born in 1955 in Conegliano, Trevise, Italy.
Francesco Moretti began his artistic training at the Treviso College of Art, going on to the Venice Academy of Fine Arts where he graduated in scenography. For a few years he worked in the theatre as assistant to architect Giovanni Soccol for the Montepulciano Festival (Tuscany) and with theatre sculptor Paolo Guolo. His many interests include photography and he has published a book of portraits «Treviso l'ultima». He has also contributed to other photographic publications on the subject of architecture. In 1986 he moved to Paris, where he developed a graphic design business and concentrated on sculpture and drawing.
The subject of his works is « nature » in general : humans and their context. Figures appear in his work as a starting point for his research into shapes, which abandon their original appearance to evolve towards a more independent dimension. They are essential shapes, apparent on careful observation in an atmosphere of contemplation and silence. He likes to work with sheets of metal. The volumes are created by empty spaces rather than solid masses. The metal edges create lines that add their own pattern to the volumes.
Francesco Moretti is against artisan virtuosity and decorative complacency as he seeks without artifices to make the process of building shapes comprehensible.
