Biography / Bibliography
French-American artist born in 1928 in Nice (France) and dead in 2005 in New-York.
Armand Pierre Fernandez, or Arman, was born on November 17, 1928 in Nice. His first encounter with art was in his father's antique shop. He starts painting when he is ten years old. He studies at the Decorative Arts School in Nice, where he meets Yves Klein, and later studies at the Louvre. At an exposition at Iris Clert in 1958, Arman notices a printing error on his invitation 5Armand was written without a "d"), and thusly transforms his signature. He becomes a member of the Nouveaux Réalistes, notably alongside César.
His first "Cachets" (traces of inked or painted objects) in Paris is in 1958. In 1959 he begins zork on his series Trash: he exhibits garbage from the street and from refuse bins. His "accumulation" of objects follows a quantitative logic that effaces their singularity for an image of profusion, while simultaneously highlighting the perishable products of a consumerist society. In 1960 he uses Plexiglas for the first time. At the end of the 1990s, his work radicalizes with a succession of gestures tied to the object (Accumulations in Relation, Cascades, Sandwich Combo). His bronze sculptures act in a similar way: the artist takes icons of Western art (Venus de Milo, Hercules Farnese, etc.) and cuts them so as to re-inscribe them into haphazard disorder.
Arman has incorporated his art into the public spaces of almost 100 cities across the world with the realization of his monumental works: at the République at the Palais de l?Elysée in Paris, in New York (Rostropovitch?s Tower), at Saint Lazare Station in Paris (the piles of suitcases and clocks), in Chicago (a monumental tower), and then the Long Term Parking at the ex-Cartier Foundation in Jouy-en-Josas, an accumulation of veritable automobile carcasses superimposed on top of one another and cast in concrete. He dies on October 22, 2005 in New York. He possessed dual citizenship in both the United States and in France, which he had acquired in 1970.
